1c Blue, Ty. III (Scott 21). Plate 4, original gum, h.r., rich color on bright paper VERY FINE. A SCARCE SOUND ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE PERFORATED 1857 ONE-CENT TYPE III STAMP. This stamp was made from Plate 4, which had narrow spacing between stamps. It originally produced imperforate stamps and was used only briefly after the introduction of perforations in 1857 before being discontinued. The narrow spacing on the plate, combined with the difficulties experienced when perforations were first introduced, accounts for the rarity of well-centered stamps made from this plate. With 1957 and 2005 P.F. certificates

1c Blue, Ty. III (21). Original gum, described as Mint Never-Hinged on P.F. certificate, but the new P.S.E. certificate states previously hinged due to three tiny natural gum irregularities and a very faint fingerprint in one corner—we have seen the same kind of natural gum blemishes on large N.H. blocks and sheets of 1851-57 Issues, so it seems grossly unfair to disqualify this stamp as Mint N.H. because of them—deep rich Plate 4 color and proof-like impression on bright paper, showing clear breaks at top and bottom (the defining characteristic of the type), the gum is pristine and, as noted, has a few small natural skips and faint fingerprint VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A GORGEOUS EXAMPLE OF THE PERFORATED ONE-CENT TYPE III. VERY FEW EXIST IN ANY TYPE OF ACCEPTABLE ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION. IN OUR OPINION AND THE OPINION OF THE PHILATELIC FOUNDATION, THIS STAMP IS MINT NEVER-HINGED. With 1990 and 1995 P.F. certificates (as Mint N.H.), and 2008 P.S.E. certificate (OGph, F-VF 75). Scott Retail as hinged.

1c Blue, Ty. III (Scott 21). Plate 4, choice centering, intense color and impression on bright paper, long and full perforations all around, light strike of circular datestamp EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 ONE-CENT TYPE III, WHICH HAS BEEN GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E. Due to the narrow vertical spacing on this plate, stamps are most typically found with the perforations impinging on some portion of the design. The example offered here is centered so that the type characteristics are clearly visible. With 2008 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95, SMQ $16,500.00). None have graded higher to date (nine 95’s in total).
