5c Orange Brown, Ty. II (Scott 30). Beautifully centered, deep rich color on fresh paper, light but clear red town cancel struck at lower right leaving entire design unobscured EXTREMELY FINE USED EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT TYPE II ORANGE BROWN. The Orange Brown is much scarcer used than unused. Examples in this choice sound used condition are rare. With 2002 P.F., 1998 and 2005 P.S.E. certificates (XF 90, SMQ value $3,150.00). Only three examples have been graded higher (at 95) and this is the only stamp to achieve this grade

Scott price $1,400 THE 5¢ TYPE II IS VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO LOCATE WITHOUT THE PERFORATIONS IMPINGING ON THE DESIGN AT EITHER THE TOP OR BOTTOM. WHEN THAT RARE ATTRIBUTE IS COMBINED WITH THE EXTRAORDINARY CENTERING, CHOICE COLOR AND BEAUTIFUL CANCEL OF THIS EXAMPLE, THE RESULT IS A ONE-OF-A-KIND GEM. Expertization: 2001 PF Certificate. Provenance: Hall. Due to the onset of the Civil War, the type II 5¢ orange brown had a period of use of less than two months. Finding a gem used single is exceedingly difficult—in fact, this may well be the finest example extant.

5c Orange Brown, Ty. II (30). Brilliant color, well-centered with wide margins at sides, perforations clear of design all around, vivid red grid cancel struck at top leaves design clearly visible EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT TYPE II IN THE 1861 ORANGE BROWN SHADE, AND ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE COMPLEMENTARY RED GRID CANCEL. 5c stamps in the Orange Brown shade (Scott 30) were printed from Plate 2 in 1861. They were the last stamps of the 1857 Issue distributed before the U.S. Post Office Department demonetized all circulating stamps in August 1861. 5c Orange Brown, Ty. II (Scott 30). Block of four, original gum, h.r., intense shade and impression, few perf separations sensibly reinforced FINE. A SCARCE ORIGINAL-GUM BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE 1861 5-CENT ORANGE BROWN. Although a relatively large number of 5c Orange Browns reached collectors from unused supplies left over after the issue was demonetized due to the Civil War, multiples are scarce, and most have been broken to feed the market’s desire for singles.
