1c Blue, Ty. Ic (6b). Position 82R4 (E Relief), full margins to just barely in at bottom, intense shade and impression, single penstroke cancel, Very Fine, a pretty stamp, Scott value for pen cancel is half of handstamped cancel, but in our opinion this peculiar bias should not apply to 1c 1851-57 stamps, because a pen line leaves so much more of the design unobscured

Aug. 11” manuscript postmark, tiny tear at top right of right stamp FINE-VERY FINE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE STRIP OF THREE OF THE IMPERFORATE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE Ia, THE LARGEST-SIZE MULTIPLE OF THIS TYPE THAT EXISTS. The extremely rare Type Ia, showing the full design at bottom, was furnished only by 18 of the 200 subjects on Plate 4 (the remaining two bottom-row positions were sub-type Ic). One unused combination block is recorded, in which the lower pair is Type 1a. Frank S. Levi Jr. recorded seven used strips of three of the imperforate Type Ia (see Bakers’ U.S. Classics, p. 188). Four pairs are also recorded. Ex Neinken. Scott Retail as pair and single $43,000.00

1c Blue, Ty. Ia (Scott 6). Position 95R4, large even margins all around, used with 1c Blue, Ty. III (8) and Ty. IIIa (8A), Positions 48R4 and 60R4 respectively (60R is an imprint position but the sheet margin is not large enough to show it), mostly large margins to touched, arranged to appear as a strip of three and tied by large “Greenwood Depot Va. Jun. 20” circular datestamp on brownish cover to Woodville Depot Va., few toned spots and slight edgewear, missing part of top flap AN EXTREMELY FINE GEM EXAMPLE OF THE IMPERFORATE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE Ia USED WITH VERY FINE EXAMPLES OF TYPES III AND IIIa FROM THE SAME SHEET. A FANTASTIC COVER BEARING THREE DIFFERENT TYPES OF THE 1851 ONE-CENT IMPERFORATE FROM PLATE 4. This cover bears three singles from Plate 4, but from different areas of the plate. One could speculate that they were cut apart for use on circulars, then used together to make up the 3c letter rate. The Type Ia on this cover is a phenomenal stamp and would be worth our estimate off cover. Ex Emerson and Neinken

1c Blue, Ty. Ia (Scott 6). Position 99R4, huge margins all around, deep rich Plate 4 shade and proof-like impression, barely cancelled by a very light strike of circular datestamp EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE IMPERFORATE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE Ia. A BEAUTIFUL STAMP IN EVERY RESPECT — IT HAS BRIGHT PAPER, DEEP RICH COLOR, A PROOF-LIKE IMPRESSION AND A LIGHT CANCELLATION WHICH ALLOWS THE TYPE CHARACTERISTICS TO BE CLEARLY SEEN. Stamps printed from Plate 4 were issued in April, May and briefly in June 1857 before perforations were introduced. The relatively small number of imperforate Plate 4 stamps issued during this period explains the rarity and desirability of any of the imperforate stamp types produced from this plate (Ia, Ic, II, III and IIIa). The extremely rare Type Ia, showing the full design at bottom, was furnished only by 18 of the 200 subjects on Plate 4 (the remaining two bottom-row positions were sub-type Ic). Ex Neinken. The 1925 Kelleher sale of the Dr. Carroll Chase collection featured a Type Ia described as “black town canc. is so light that stamp appears unused” (lot 368), which seems to describe this stamp, but since there were no photographs in the sale catalogue, we cannot be sure if this the ex-Chase stamp.

Expertization: 1996 PF Certificate noting position but mistakenly noting Scott number as 6. There are eight positions on plate 4 that produced type Ic stamps. Six of those are “E” reliefs, while the other two are “F” reliefs from the bottom row of the right pane. The latter two, positions 91R and 96R, are considered to display the finest type characteristics.
