1c Blue, Ty. IV, Printed on Both Sides, Reverse Inverted (9a). The back has a right-reading impression of the top part of the design printed upside down relative to the normal impression on face, normal side with large margins to just touched with part of adjoining stamps at top and left, rich color, neat strike of large Boston “Paid” grid, light corner crease at top right VERY FINE. THE UNIQUE EXAMPLE OF THE ONE-CENT 1851 ISSUE WITH THE DESIGN PRINTED ON BOTH SIDES. A PHENOMENAL RARITY AND ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WAGSHAL COLLECTION. It has been theorized that, for the printed-on-both-sides varieties, the back was printed first. The impressions for other stamps are normally either faint or off-register, and so the paper was probably reused to obtain the better printing found on the front. A similar explanation has been given for double impressions. This is the only 1c 1851-57 design that exists printed on both sides. The 3c also exists (Scott 10A, also unique) as does the 12c (two known plus two bisects). The 5c and 10c, which were printed in 1856 and 1855, are not known. With 1977 P.F. certificate. Listed but unpriced in Scott. Offered to the market for the first time in decades. Robert Siegel Auction Galleries, Sep 2010, Sale 994, Lot 819 |
