5c Brown, F. Grill (Scott 95). Deep rich color, showing an overall kiss print, especially evident at top in lettering of “U.S. Postage”, choice centering with well-balanced margins, unobtrusive strike of cork cancel leaves entire design clearly visible, Very Fine and choice, a rare variety on this issue and the only one we have encountered, the 5c F Grill is not known with a true double impression, the example offered here shows some doubling but one of the impressions lacks the clear lines of the engraving, which is a requirement of a true double impression, ex Natalee Grace, with 1996, 2001 and 2012 P.F. certificates, the latter two confirming the kiss print.

5c Brown, F. Grill (Scott 95). Choice centering with uncharacteristically wide margins leaving a white frame all around the design, rosette fancy cancel, deep rich color on fresh paper, clear grill points EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THE 1868 5-CENT F GRILL IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT ISSUES TO FIND WITH WIDE MARGINS ON ALL SIDES. The narrow space between stamps and large 12-gauge perforations left little opportunity to clear the design. This stamp is an extraordinary exception to the rule. Ex Natalee Grace. With 1998 P.F. and 2009 P.S.E. certificates (XF 90; SMQ price $2,250.00). Only two have graded higher (both at 95).

5c Brown, F. Grill, Very Thin Paper (95 var). Original gum, lightly hinged, clearly-defined grill, deep rich color and proof-like impression VERY FINE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 5-CENT F GRILL ON VERY THIN PAPER. The National Bank Note Co. undoubtedly made various attempts to improve grilling quality and efficiency through modifications in the process. Based on surviving stamps, it appears that one modification involved the use of very thin paper, which probably allowed two or more sheets to be grilled in one pass through the grilling device. The 1c (F), 2c (E and F), 3c (E and F), 5c (F), 10c (F), 12c (F) and 15c (F) are found on this very thin paper. They are scarce, particularly the 5c-15c values. With 1975 P.F. certificate
