90c Blue, F. Grill (Scott 101). Outstanding centering with wide well-balanced margins, rich color, fancy Sawtooth Circle fancy cancel almost encircling Washington’s face EXTREMELY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING CHOICE USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 90-CENT F GRILL WITH AN UNUSUAL FANCY CANCELLATION. The 90c stamps used to make grilled issues were printed on a thick stock of paper. It is likely that sheets remaining from the pre-grill period were used and that the thinner paper introduced in 1868 had not been used for the 90c value. Two characteristics of 90c F Grill stamps are poorly punched perforations and generally bad centering. This stamp is a remarkable exception. The perfs are much better formed than usual (although they show the genuine characteristics) and the centering is far superior to the average. In this stamp there is also the added feature of a striking Sawtooth Circle fancy cancel. Robert Siegel Auction Galleries, Oct 2011, Sale 1014, Lot 1262 |

90c Blue, F. Grill (Scott 101). Block of four, each stamp with clearly-defined grill, unobtrusive cork cancels leave the design clearly visible, centered to top right, small corner crease at top left, bottom left stamp sealed tear at left center VERY GOOD APPEARANCE. ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED INTACT USED BLOCKS OF THE 1868 90-CENT F GRILL. A GREAT RARITY. Multiples of higher-denomination stamps such as the 90c F Grill were usually used on heavy parcels or large covers to foreign countries. The parcels or wrappers were rarely kept, and so few multiples have survived. Of the 90c F Grill, we record two other off-center blocks, as well as two rejoined and faulty blocks (one ex Klein and the other ex Ishikawa). 90c Blue, F. Grill (Scott 101). Perfectly centered with wide margins, beautiful shade and impression, red cork cancel, much better formed perfs than typically encountered EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SPECTACULAR USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 90-CENT F GRILL, COMBINING FLAWLESS CENTERING, PERFORATIONS, COLOR AND A PREMIUM CANCEL.
