90c Blue, F. Grill (Scott 101). Unusually choice centering with wide margins, deep rich color on bright paper, neat strike of grid cancel EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1868 90-CENT F GRILL. The 90c stamps used to make grilled issues were printed on a thick stock of paper. It is likely that sheets remaining from the pre-grill period were used and that the thinner paper introduced in 1868 had not been used for the 90c value. Two characteristics of 90c F Grill stamps are poorly punched perforations and generally poor centering. With 2008 P.S.E. certificate (XF 90, SMQ price $5,000.00). Only three have graded higher to date and only three others share this grade. Robert Siegel Auction Galleries, Jun 2012, Sale 1025, Lot 123 |

90c Blue, F. Grill (Scott 101). Horizontal pair, original gum, h.r., clearly-defined grills, bright color, faint horizontal crease FINE-VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE ORIGINAL-GUM MULTIPLE OF THE 1868 90-CENT F GRILL. The largest recorded multiple for this issue is a block of four. Only two or possibly three are known — it is difficult to know if one is duplicated since the Worthington and Hind catalogues were restricted from having photographs of stamps. We have offered only one in all of our Rarities sales and since keeping computerized records (ex Zoellner), and its centering is similar to the pair offered here, as is the strip of four from the Caspary sale.
