$2.00 Bright Blue (Scott 262). Original gum, lightly hinged, gorgeous rich color on bright white paper, remarkably well-centered with enormous margins all around EXTREMELY FINE. VERY RARE IN THIS QUALITY WITH ORIGINAL GUM. The 1894 unwatermarked issue was the first U.S. stamp issue printed by the Bureau of Engraving & Printing. This issue is notoriously difficult to find well-centered, as production was marred by initial problems as the Bureau feverishly worked to satisfy the public demand for stamps. The $2.00 is one of the rarest of the set in this original-gum condition and choice grade. With 2000 P.F. certificate Robert Siegel Auction Galleries, Apr 2009, Sale 972, Lot 3253 |

$2.00 Bright Blue (Scott 262). Bottom imprint and plate no. 84 block of six, original gum, lightly hinged, natural gum bends, centered to top left VERY GOOD. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED PLATE BLOCK OF THE 1894 $2.00 UNWATERMARKED BUREAU ISSUE — A GREAT RARITY OF THE ISSUE. After extensive effort, we failed to locate another plate block of the $2.00 1894 Unwatermarked Bureau Issue. None was found using Power Search, and our manual search of famous plate block collections, including Eno, Lilly, Todd, Wampler, Fogelson, did not produce another plate block. Lewis Kaufman confirmed that his records show only this one example. Although the centering reflects the typical poor production standards of the 1894 Issue, the first produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, this condition factor must be disregarded.
