24c Blackish Violet (78c). Original gum, deep rich color in the true Blackish Violet shade, sharp proof-like impression on crisp paper, exceptional centering for this difficult issue with long and full perforations all around EXTREMELY FINE. THIS IS THE EX CASPARY-LILLY-SEYMOUR-CHAPIN COPY OF THE 1863 24-CENT BLACKISH VIOLET. WIDELY REGARDED AS ONE OF THE TWO FINEST EXAMPLES OF THIS SHADE, WHICH IS ARGUABLY THE MOST DIFFICULT OF THE 1861-66 ISSUE SHADES TO FIND IN SOUND, CENTERED AND ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION. The Blackish Violet is a distinctive shade, which due to its intensity can sometimes be confused by the uninitiated with the 24c First Color, Scott 60. However, when one sees the true Blackish Violet, such as the example offered here, the differences become more manifest. Even though both printings have the same intensity, the Blackish Violet is significantly darker. Less distinct examples do not show this difference to such great effect. Our records of the 24c Blackish Violet contain only two other unused examples of this shade. One stamp, ex Wunderlich and Zoellner, was last offered in our 1998 Zoellner sale and now resides in an important private collection. The third stamp has original gum, it has a straight-edge at right and is centered to top. Ex Caspary, Lilly, Seymour and Chapin (acquired privately). With 1967 and 2003 P.F. certificates. Footnote in Scott Catalogue states Only three examples are recorded of No. 78c unused with original gum. No. 78c unused with and without gum are valued in the grade of Fine-Very Fine”

30c Orange (71). Original gum, bright color and beautiful Jumbo margins, almost perfectly centered EXTREMELY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 30-CENT ORANGE 1861 ISSUE, WHICH HAS BEEN GRADED XF 90 JUMBO BY P.S.E. — THIS IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED TO DATE AND THE ONLY EXAMPLE TO ACHIEVE THIS GRADE. AN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT STAMP TO FIND IN THE HIGHER GRADES. The narrowly-spaced 30c 1861 plate left very little room for the 12-gauge perforations between stamps. Consequently, examples with wide margins at sides are extremely rare — this fact is acknowledged in the Scott Catalogue footnote to No. 71. With 2008 P.S.E. certificate (XF 90 Jumbo, SMQ price $6,900.00 for 90, $15,600.00 for 95). This is the highest grade awarded to date for an original-gum stamp and the only example to achieve this grade.

3c Rose, Printed on Both Sides (65e). Original gum, barely hinged, face of stamp has choice centering with brilliant color and wide margins, back of stamp shows clear impression inverted relative to face and angled, completely sound EXTREMELY FINE. THIS SINGLE AND THE PAIR OFFERED IN THE FOLOWING LOT ARE THE ONLY RECORDED ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLES OF THE 3-CENT 1861 ISSUE PRINTED ON BOTH SIDES. THIS IS A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO OWN ALL THREE UNUSED EXAMPLES. The most comprehensive census of Scott 65e has been compiled by Jim Zollweg. This rare variety is known with the image on back inverted (as on the single and pair offered in this sale) and rightside up, indicating that more than one sheet was released to the public. Used copies have been found in both configurations. Mr. Zollweg records three unused stamps (the pair and single in this sale) and eleven used. The pair and single were originally joined as a strip of three in the Lilly sale. Viewed from the face, the single was joined to the right of the pair. Ex Lilly as a strip of three.
