15c Brown & Blue, Ty. II (Scott 119). Deep rich colors and proof-like impressions, choice centering with wide margins, neat cancel EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED USED EXAMPLE OF THE 15-CENT TYPE II 1869 PICTORIAL. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT STAMP TO FIND WITH SUCH OUTSTANDING CENTERING. With 2010 P.F. and 2005 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95, SMQ $2,100.00). A review of the P.S.E. Population Report statistics for the 15c 1869 Pictorials reveals a surprising fact. Out of 151 submissions of used Ty. II stamps, only one has graded 98 and only five have graded 95, including this stamp. The scarcer Ty. I has had 35 fewer used stamps submitted, but has had two 98J stamps (including the example offered in lot 3191), one 98, one 95J and nine 95’s. Neither type has had an example grade over 90 in unused condition. Robert Siegel Auction Galleries, Oct 2012, Sale 1032, Lot 3193 |

15c Brown & Blue, Ty. II, Split Grill (119 var). Majority of grill is at top left corner and with small part of grill at top right, wide margins, rich colors and detailed impressions, unobtrusive strike of cork cancel, Extremely Fine, with 1998 P.F. and 2011 P.S.E. certificates (XF 90 Jumbo, unpriced in SMQ as split grill, SMQ value $650.00 as 90, $2,100.00 as 95 for normal grill), this is one of only two 90J’s in the P.S.E. Population Report, with only five stamps grading higher, it is not clear if any of these others are split grills, but we doubt it Robert Siegel Auction Galleries, Oct 2012, Sale 1032, Lot 3194 |

15c Brown & Blue, Ty. II, Center Inverted (Scott 119b). Deep rich colors and proof-like impressions on crisp paper, perfs well clear of design all around, neat strike of New York City Large 5-Point Star fancy cancel leaves entire design clearly visible EXTREMELY FINE. THIS STAMP IS WIDELY ESTEEMED AS THE FINEST USED EXAMPLE OF THE 15-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL INVERT EXTANT. THE COLORS ARE REMARKABLE, THE MARGINS ARE WIDE ALL AROUND, IT HAS A STAR FANCY CANCEL, AND IT IS COMPLETELY SOUND. A TRULY REMARKABLE STAMP. Our census of 15c 1869 Inverts, recently updated at our website at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/119b/119b.pdf , contains three unused and 96 used (one in the British Library’s Tapling collection and one in the NY Public Library’s Miller Collection). Only nine are confirmed as sound, and virtually all have perfs either close or touching on one or more sides. This is considered to be the finest truly sound stamp. Census No. 119b-CAN-31. Ex Moody, “Ambassador”, Wunderlich, Kantor, Koppersmith and Eubanks. With 1971, 1986, 2001 and 2010 P.F. certificates. Robert Siegel Auction Galleries, Sep 2012, Sale 1027, Lot 15 |

15c Brown & Blue, Center Double, One Inverted (119c). Choice centering, rich colors and detailed impressions, light strike of circle of wedges cancel leaves design clearly visible, doubling of design clearly visible in margins at left and at right EXTREMELY FINE. THIS STAMP IS ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF ALL 15-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL INVERTS. IT IS ALSO THE FINEST EXAMPLE OF SCOTT 119c — CENTER DOUBLE WITH ONE INVERTED — IN EXISTENCE. ONLY THREE EXAMPLES OF THIS RARITY ARE RECORDED. In an article in Chronicle No. 181, February 1999, Scott R. Trepel examines the three confirmed examples of the Scott 119c variety and offers a theory as to how they were produced. Using computer imaging software and high-resolution scans, he makes the argument that the upright impression of the vignette, which in all three cases is faint, was created as a result of offset when the sheet was accidentally folded over on itself and stacked. His work is reproduced at left. The three recorded examples of Scott 119c are illustrated below. Only one other is potentially sound. Census No. 119c-CAN-01. Ex Newbury and Drucker. With 2009 P.F. certificate. Scott Catalogue value has not changed in almost a decade. Robert Siegel Auction Galleries, Sep 2012, Sale 1027, Lot 16 |
