Scott #122, 90c Carmine and black, a phenomenal mint example of this popular and much sought-after high value, possessing numerous desirable physical characteristics seldom found converging on a single copy, the most notable being its flawless centering within uncommonly wide and beautifully balanced margins, plus both its color and impression would rival that of a proof, while full and even perforations all around further enhance its tremendous eye-appeal, even its reverse is unusual in that it still retains a large part of its original gum, an extremely fine gem; one of the finest mint singles in existence and one of a mere five examples to achieve the lofty grade of 95, with none grading higher; 2008 PSE certificate (XF-Sup 95; $77,500.00).

90c Carmine & Black (Scott 122). Wonderful depth of frame color, unusually choice centering with wide margins, cork cancel EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A BEAUTIFUL USED EXAMPLE OF THE 90-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE, WHICH HAS BEEN GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E. The 90c 1869 Pictorial is widely admired for its beautiful engraving and dignified portrait of Abraham Lincoln. However, collectors have been frustrated in their efforts to acquire choice examples of this issue. Used 90c stamps are typically heavily cancelled, because the high denomination was cause for postal clerks to thoroughly obliterate any chance for re-use. Naturally, the significant monetary value of 90c in 1869 limited the number of unused stamps that would be saved for future collectors. With 1973 P.F. and 2007 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95; SMQ price $8,800.00). Only three have graded higher and six others share this grade.
