US Stamp Prices Scott Catalog #O72: 1873 1c Treasury Official. Robert Siegel Auction Galleries, Mar 2015, Sale 1095, Lot 640

1c Treasury, Specimen Ovpt. (O72S). Block of 74, without gum as issued, rich color, natural s.e. at sides, some toned spots FINE-VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A MAGNIFICENT AND EXTREMELY RARE BLOCK OF 74 OF THE ONE-CENT TREASURY SPECIAL PRINTING. Position 21 showed the “Sepcimen” error in the early production of the Official Special Printings. It was evidently corrected during the printing of the 2c Interior, since that stamp comes with and without the error. None of the Treasury Special Printing values are known with the “Sepcimen” error, as this block containing Position 21 demonstrates. Scott Retail as 18 blocks of four and two singles

3c State, “Sepcimen” Error (Scott O59Sa). Without gum as issued, distinctive shade, outstanding margins and centering — very unusual for this rare issue as many Official Special Printings come with scissors-separated perfs — just a hint of toning in bottom perfs at right EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 3-CENT STATE DEPARTMENT “SEPCIMEN” ERROR. ONLY APPROXIMATELY FIVE EXAMPLES ARE KNOWN. Only 793 of the 3c State Department Special Printing were sold, which indicates no more than eight “Sepcimen” errors were sold. Only five recorded were by Markovits (2004 Bennett sale). There is one in the Miller collection (on extended loan by The New York Public Library to the Smithsonian National Postal Museum). We are aware of five privately-owned examples: the Lewenthal, Combs, Sheriff, Markovits and Golden copies. This is the first example to appear in our auctions since we offered the ex-Markovits copy in 2005, which has a straight edge from scissors-separations.

Positions 31-32/81-82, 53-57/93-97, 78-80/98-100, part sheet of 46 from rejoined vertical blocks of 12, 25 and 9, without gum as issued, bottom with part imprint and plate no. 59 as well as the Position 98 major double transfer, most stamps with perfs at least clear of design, some toning between perfs in a few places and some minor perf separations as would be expected in such a multiple FINE-VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE PART IMPRINT AND PLATE NUMBER MULTIPLE OF THE 2-CENT STATE DEPARTMENT SPECIAL PRINTING. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE SHOWING THE MAJOR DOUBLE TRANSFER IN POSITION 98. All the State Department issues below the dollar denominations were printed from sheets of 100 stamps. Position 98 on the 2c plate contains one of the most pronounced double transfers of any Official issue. Combining it with a multiple which also shows the part imprint and plate number makes this one of the most outstanding Official Special Printing items extant. Scott Retail as blocks and singles without regard to the premium positions or double transfer

Value of US Stamps Scott Catalogue #O49: 3c 1873 Post Office Official. Robert Siegel Auction Galleries, Mar 2015, Sale 1095, Lot 606

3c Post Office, “Sepcimen” Error (O49Sa). Without gum as issued, scissors-separated but perforations are mostly intact except for a few at top THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT POST OFFICE DEPARTMENT SPECIAL PRINTING WITH “SEPCIMEN” ERROR. ONE OF THE GREAT RARITIES OF SPECIAL PRINTINGS. Only 91 copies of the 3c Post Office Special Printing were sold. Assuming that one sheet was divided and sold before starting on the next sequential sheet (we do not know if that, in fact, was the practice), then no more than one 3c Post Office “Sepcimen” error (Position 21) was sold. According to Combs, the existence of a 3c Post Office “Sepcimen” was reported by Konwiser in 1925 (see page 40 of Combs booklet), but it was not listed in the Scott Catalogue until 1971, two years after it was certified by Herbert Bloch of the Friedl Expert Committee. With 1969 Friedl certificate.
